FIRST WORLD WAR

Sample itinerary. World War I

 

Day 1

Depart South Wales early morning and travel to Dover to connect with a lunchtime ferry from Dover to Calais. Arrive at Ypres late afternoon.

 

Day 2 

Full day guided tour of the Somme. Creigiau Tours and Ski would like to suggest the following:

Mametz Wood, this was the objective of the 38th Welsh Division during the first Battle of the Somme between 7th - 12th of July 1916.

Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, this is a major war memorial to the 72.195 missing British and South Africans who died during the War and had no grave.

Beaumont Hamel Newfoundland Memorial, this site is dedicated to the Newfoundland Regiment that made an unsuccessful attack the 1st of July 1916 the first day of the Battle of the Somme, within 30 minutes the whole Regiment were wiped out.

Lochnager Mine Crater, the largest British Mine Crater of the Western Front.

 

 

Day 3

Full day guided tour of the Ypres Salient, taking in:

Hooge Crater Museum which is housed in a restored Chapel located where one of the fiercest Battles of Ypres was fought.

Tyne Cot Cemetery is a Commonwealth War Graves Commission burial ground for the dead of World War I in the Ypres Salient on the Western Front.

Hill 62, Sanctuary Wood, this is a memorial that stands in tribute to the sacrifices and achievements of Canadian soldiers. 

Complete the day by a visit to the Last Post Ceremony, since 1928 the Last Post Ceremony, the traditional salute to the fallen warrior, has been played every evening at precisely 20:00hrs under the Menin Gate in Ypres. The privilege of playing the Last Post was given to the buglers of the local volunteer fire brigade.

 

Day 4

Depart after breakfast for journey to Calais to connect with ferry to Dover, arrive in South Wales late evening.
